Frequently Asked Questions
Who is therapy for?
Therapy isn’t designed to “fix” you because you aren’t broken. We all have ways of coping with the daily stressors of life - some healthy and some not. Therapy is designed to help clients gain a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. People seek out therapy for all sorts of reasons, such as but not limited to:
To process through past trauma
A desire to cope more effectively with daily stressors
To learn new coping skills
To identify defense mechanisms that impede interpersonal relationships
To address addictions and other unhealthy behaviors
To cope with major life changes such as divorce, moves, sudden loss, etc.
Gender identity questions
Sexual dysfunction and intimacy issues
Career concerns
Together, we will navigate how to identify the behaviors and thought processes that no longer serve you well. As a clinical practitioner, my role is to help facilitate your interpersonal growth and self-awareness. You are the author of your story; I’m here to help with the narration.
So, how do you know if you’re “ready” for therapy? Ask yourself the following:
Am I open to self-evaluation and reflection?
Am I ready to make tangible changes in my life?
Do I want to shift my perspective?
Am I prepared to take on the time investment and potential financial cost associated with therapy?
What should I expect from my first therapy session?
You may experience heightened emotions. We will be diving into relevant historical information as well as your current stressors. You may find that you feel more emotional or sensitive than is typical. Make a post-therapy self-care plan here.
It is possible that you’ll feel (temporarily) worse before you feel better. As we begin to explore compartments that you’ve typically kept sealed, you might notice that some unexpected emotions surface. In successive sessions we will learn strategies for observing emotions rather than reacting to them.
Prior to attending your first session, please:
Complete intake paperwork sent via email and upload insurance card (if applicable)
Note that we do require that a method of payment is kept on file even if you are using health insurance
Consider 2-3 goals you would like to achieve through therapy
What if I don’t “click” with my therapist?
Development of rapport is essential for a successful therapeutic relationship. Sometimes it takes a bit of initial legwork on the client’s part to find a compatible counselor. We invite you to communicate open and honestly with me regarding your experience of the therapeutic space. If upon further exploration it is decided that another provider might more effectively meet your treatment needs, we will gladly provide a referral.
How long will this take?
Short answer: the initial session often requires a full hour. Subsequent sessions are 50 minutes. Please plan to arrive on time for session so that we can make the most efficient use of this time together.
Long answer: we will discuss in your first couple of sessions your individualized needs and anticipated length of treatment. Expect to attend therapy for at least 9 months while doing weekly or biweekly sessions. Psychotherapy is an investment and not a quick fix. It takes time to develop the trust and understanding necessary to most effectively mobilize change.
How much will this cost?
That depends! Take a look here for more information on session costs.
How do I make an appointment?
